Babybel — Packaging Redesign
Adobe Illustrator
Concept
While analyzing their current packaging, it was immediately noted that their plastic netting used to bundle multiple cheese snacks would have a lasting impact on the environment. Alongside their wax coating used to preserve the cheese, the plastic use between the netting and individual cheese plastic wrappings counter their aim to be environmentally sustainable.
While reviewing their other branding through their website and other packaging designs, they have created simple characters to represent their cheese snacks, which created an approachable and trustworthy element to their brand.
Development
Brainstorming an innovative way to showcase their product led to the decision to create a carton package to hold multiple cheese snacks.
This would allow for simple packaging of multiple cartons for productive shipping, as well as hi-light their use of 100% real cheese with a visual element linked directly to dairy products.
The characters discovered through their website inspired the idea to include a cheese snack character on the carton for a unique trait in the cheese section of grocery stores. This then led to the development of a perforated pull tab to open the carton with its placement on the character, mimicking the process of opening the wax on the cheese snacks. This feature leaves the user with a memorable experience unique to Babybel.
Outcome
Visual elements on the carton were pulled from previous branding elements from Babybel to allow for easy brand recognition after the changes being made. In order to further develop trust with the user, a callout on one side of the carton was utilized to direct them to the Babybel website. To develop a unique experience with their younger target audience, a maze game was included on the back of the carton, as well as information about their recycling partner, TerraCycle, to encourage responsible waste practices.
